The Dean’s message to students is about the nature and the full import of Theology which is their field of studies. The word Theology is derived from the Greek word theologia, which is a combination of two words and means an account of or discourse about God or gods. Among the Greeks, poets were called thoelogoi and two examples of this are Homer and Hesiod. Philo called Moses a theologos, that is one who speaks of God or God’s spokesman.
In some manuscripts the last book of the New Testament is entitled “The Revelation of John the Theologos.” By AD 200 theologia and its Latin translation were being used of Christian teaching about God. According to Athanasius, theologia is knowledge of God in His own being as distinct from His dealings with the world while Augustine restricts it to teaching about the Godhead.
Theology belongs within the community of faith and the teaching about God and knowledge of God cannot be compartmentalized. The teaching about God is not an end in itself but a means to an end which is knowledge of God.
Theology students must have background knowledge of the field of theology to serve as a strong foundation upon which they will build the superstructure of theological studies. This leads us to the issue of the justification of students for making the School of Theology their preferred choice of the field of studies. You have made a very good decision by electing to study Theology because you have everything to gain by studying the Queen of the Sciences.
